Development of Functioning Collection Rover
“During my internship, my team created a functioning rover with a collection mechanism that will be used in Lockheed Martin’s Engineering Explorers program as a basis for their year-long high school project competition.”
Findings and Results
“Our final result was a functioning robot with a claw that can pick up a ball and carry it to a designated spot. It is controlled by a phone app and also has an infrared laser tag function that can be used when multiple robots are being used at once.”
“I learned how to CAD this summer, specifically using CREO, and became more familiar with 3D printing, circuit design, and Arduinos. For the project, I designed and built the claw used to pick up objects.
I learned so much during this experience. I had never worked in an engineering environment like this before as a physics major, so this gave me a new point of view and introduced me to the field. I did notice that there were very few women around to act as mentors, and I wished that there could be more. Other than that, I had a fantastic experience. I was unsure if I wanted to go into industry as an engineer prior to this experience, but the internship has made me realize that I do. It has also helped me realize that I am more interested in electrical engineering than mechanical.“
