NASA ARtemis Space Tech Academy

Courtesy of NASA National Space Grant Member, Illinois Space Grant Consortium, Illinois Space Tech Academy is an open-source space technology resource supported by NASA. The courses in this open resource aim to increase the foundational knowledge base of undergraduate students and anyone interested in NASA Artemis-related science and technology.

The course includes: Four modules for a more in-depth look at the NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) thrusts of GO, LAND, LIVE, and EXPLORE.

Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship

NOAA’s Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship provides students pursuing NOAA-related fields with financial support and hands-on professional experience. Selected scholars receive up to $9,500 per year for two academic years, along with a 10-week paid summer internship at a NOAA or partner facility. The program also provides support for internship housing, travel, and opportunities to present research at national scientific conferences. Eligible applicants include U.S. citizen undergraduates studying fields such as atmospheric and oceanic sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and other disciplines supporting NOAA’s mission. For the 2027 cycle, applicants must have an anticipated bachelor’s graduation date between December 2028 and August 2029 and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.

CubeSat Builder Game

A CubeSat is a small, relatively low-cost cube-shaped spacecraft. Schools, universities, and institutions can design CubeSats to explore space in ways that previously required big, expensive satellites.

In the NASA game CubeSat Builder, build as many CubeSat spacecraft as possible in a NASA cleanroom before time runs out! Like a chef preparing food for hungry customers, build CubeSats for engineers according to the project blueprints they send in. Run around the clean room, test CubeSat parts, assemble CubeSats, and perform final tests before sending them off to the launch pad. Juggle the testing of parts while assembling more than one CubeSat at a time to build them faster!

James Webb Space Telescope STEM Toolkit

On Jan. 24, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope successfully reached its final orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, or L2, nearly 1 million miles away from Earth.

NASA Comprehensive Learning Unit: Urban Surface Temperatures and the Urban Heat Island Effects

This unit was created as a part of the NASA GISS Climate Change Research Initiative (CCRI), a year-long STEM engagement opportunity for NYC metropolitan area educators and graduate students to work directly with NASA scientists and lead research teams in a NASA research project.

Throughout this unit, students learn how climate is changing in urban settings and produce mitigation solutions for city environmental concerns. Students explore climate simulation models and global temperature profiles; learn about remote sensing and investigate instruments on climate satellites; analyze remote sensing imagery and understand the urban heat island effect; collect land surface temperature and create a physical model that promotes the concept of the urban heat island and mitigation factors to include human action towards climate in urban settings.
