Q. What is an nysg affiliate?

A: New York Space Grant Consortium Affiliates work together to create a variety of opportunities and exposure to NASA-specific STEM for students of all ages. NYSG Affiliates are comprised of universities, K-12 schools, research centers, museums, aerospace industry partners, and federal, state and local governments. NYSG Affiliates aim to contribute to the nation’s science and technology enterprise through STEM education and workforce development by funding and supporting state-specific education, research, and public engagement projects.

q.What is the difference between a funded & Unfunded Affiliate?

A: Funded Affiliates are required to do the following:

• Pay an annual membership fee in proportion to the amount of NYSG funds provided to that institution

  • NYSG uses this to communicate impact to the US Congress.

• Provide funding match when appropriate and document that match, per NASA requirements.

  • Match can be ‘in kind’ contribution of time or other non-financial resources.

• Invoice NYSG monthly and provide funding match when appropriate and document that match, per NASA requirements.

  • Match can be ‘in kind’ contribution of time or other non-financial resources.

Unfunded Affiliates differ from Funded Affiliates in many ways including:

• Not required to pay membership fees.

• Do not need to provide cost-share unless Unfunded Affiliate is awarded a funding opportunity that requires cost-share

  • If so, funding match is required and must be documented, per NASA requirements.

    • Match can be ‘in kind’ contribution of time or other non-financial resources.

• Do not need to provide NYSG monthly invoices unless Unfunded Affiliate is awarded a funding opportunity that requires monthly invoices

q. Are unfunded affiliates able to become funded affiliates?

A: Roughly once every four years, the consortium renews its grant from NASA through a proposal process. At that time, all NYSG academic affiliates can respond to a request for proposal to propose annual base funding within the upcoming multi-year award.

q. How do I become an affiliate?

A: To be become an NYSG Affiliate the following requirements must be met:

1. A college or university that desires affiliation with NASA New York Space Grant Consortium submits a letter requesting affiliation to the Associate Director/Director via nyspacegrant@cornell.edu

2. The letter includes a rationale for acceptance of the applicant as a NYSG academic affiliate

3. The NYSG Associate Director & NYSG Director will present the request to the NYSG consortium, and the consortium will vote on the acceptance of the new academic affiliate member.

   • A 2/3 affirmative vote is required to accept a new affiliate.

4. The NYSG Director, NYSG Associate Director, & NYSG Program Coordinator will mentor new affiliates to ensure that all grant requirements are met

q. What is the deadline for New affiliate proposal submissions?

A: NYSG new unfunded affiliate proposal cycles happen twice a year on June 1st & Dec 1st each year.

q. What can I expect after becoming an affiliate?

A: Identify a faculty member who will serve as the affiliate director. The affiliate director typically:

• Attends annual consortium meetings

• Serves as the programmatic point of contact with NYSG to our education and workforce-development missions

• Offer STEM programming that aligns with NYSG and NASA priorities

• Ensure that all individuals receiving a NASA Internship, Fellowship or Space Grant Scholarship are U.S. citizens. However, not all funding opportunities have this citizenship constraint.

• Assists in the preparation of the Consortium’s Annual Report and other reporting as required by NASA

  • NASA requires the collection and maintenance of accurate longitudinal data of students and faculty who receive significant support from NASA on their education, career and professional development

  • NASA requires regular updates on program successes, challenges and changes

q. Why should I become an affiliate?

A: NYSG academic affiliates and members of those academic institutions can compete for any NYSG funding opportunities.

• Faculty Opportunities - Faculty Fellowship ($30,000), Faculty Grants for Research ($18,500), Faculty Grants for Curriculum Development ($6,000)

• Student Opportunities - Women in STEM Fellowship ($5,000), Minorities in STEM Fellowship ($5,000)

• General Opportunities: NYSG Minority Program Grant ($10,000), NYSG Opportunity Grant ($2,000)
